Part A Eleanor knew that she was dying -- maybe not today or even next week -- but soon. At the age of 76, after suffering from ischaemic heart disease and cardiac failure for many years, and despite having lived an active life, she felt herself becoming considerably more breathless and moving slower and slower. Everything she did, every move she made, took an immense effort or set off the breathlessness and chest pain. In the course of a consultation with her GP she brought up the issue of what might happen to her body after her death. Eleanor’s daughter Carmel had been the successful recipient of a great deal of innovative medical treatment, having been born with a hole in her heart. Carmel was now in her late forties and living a happy life with two children of her own and Eleanor wanted to repay the debt she felt that she owed for her daughter’s life. She asked her GP, Ramona, an old friend, whether it would be possible to donate her body to science. Ramona explained that if she were to do this, her body would most likely be used for cadaveric dissection. This surprised Eleanor, as she thought that she (or at least her body) might have had the chance to participate in some new and groundbreaking experiment or organ donation. Realising that Eleanor was a bit taken aback at the thought of her body being used in this way, Ramona pointed out how important dissection was in the training of future doctors -- she was very persuasive. Eleanor agreed to go away and consider donating her body for this purpose.
